Vox realised that reaching this goal wouldn’t be easy. That it would require top-notch digital technology plus a valve power amp capable of modeling the power amp sections of a ton of classic and modern valve amplifiers. In over four tone-filled decades, VOX amplifiers have achieved classic, even cult, status. They’re the amps of choice for countless pros. But Vox knew it would take more than their own guitar amplification expertise. Vox also needed the skill and experience of a high-tech music equipment innovator. From this need, the collaboration between VOX and Korg was born.

Korg is the undisputed leader in the technology-laden world of digital music workstations and the force behind ToneWorks, the first company to master and patent “digital distortion with oversampling,” a breakthrough that made high-quality digital recreations of guitar effects and amplifiers (that sounded and felt like the real thing) a reality. Together they’ve created Valvetronix – the ultimate, hybrid digital modeling amplifier that sounds, feels and operates like a guitar amp, with no compromises or excuses.

What is Valve Reactor technology?

The Valve Reactor circuit used in the power amp of this VT15/30/50/100 combo amp is based on new technology. Most of the sound creation and tonal shaping is performed in the digital domain, but the Valve Reactor power amp is 100% analog. Passing the guitar signal through the analog-domain power amp stage is an important factor in capturing the feel and tone of the original amp for that model.

Valve Reactor’s power stage is a miniature version of a true tube push/pull power amp. It uses a 12AX7 tube (dual triode; in other words, two vacuum tubes in one), and is similar to a true tube amp with an output transformer. Rather than connecting the vacuum tube directly to a speaker via an output transformer, the signal is converted by a virtual output transformer in which solid stage components emulate the output transformer, and the final output stage circuit is connected to a specially designed VariAmp power circuit. This allows the output of the power stage to be continuously varied from minimum output to maximum output.

This VariAmp power circuit is completely transparent – i.e., it does not modify the signal – so the output tone will be the pure sound of a tube amp. The wide dynamic range seen in a conventional tube amp is also maintained. This dynamic range is a characteristic that is difficult to obtain from a solid-state amp; this is why a tube amp sounds more powerful than a solid-stage amp of the same output specifications.

The output of the Valve Reactor power amp “reads” the constantly changing impedance curve of the connected speaker system, and feeds this information back to the vacuum tube. In response to this information, the operation of the amp’s tube stage will vary according to the speaker load (impedance). This too is an important element in the sound of a true tube amp. In addition to producing lively tube sound, “circuitry characteristics” distinctive of the full-tube power stage in the amp being modeled can also be simulated. These characteristics include class-A, class-AB, and power output. By adjusting these characteristics (except for the power output, which the user specifies), every sound of that amp model can be faithfully reproduced. This power amp technology, for which a U.S. patent has been obtained, is unique to the VOX Valvetronix amps.

Vox AC-30: the classic sound of British rock!

The Vox AC30 was created in 1958 as “big brother” for the fifteen watt AC15 model, Vox’s original flagship amplifier. An article from the current issue of Total Guitar magazine describes how Hank Marvin, the guitarist in Cliff Richard’s band The Shadows, asked Vox to create a louder amp, so his guitar could be heard above the deafening noise of Cliff’s screaming, pubescent audience. Thus was born the ultimate British valve amp, launched in 1959 to great acclaim. The AC30 is one of the most recorded guitar amplifiers in rock history, not surprising given its universally acclaimed warmth and three-dimensional tonal character. What is slightly surprising is that it seems to have lost none of popularity over the years, quite the reverse in fact.

With a number of modern enhancements including blendable channels, a true bypass FX loop, spring reverb and master volume, to name just a few, the new AC30 Custom Classic is an evolution of the original that is sure to become a classic in its own right.

A bit of history:

When the Vox AC-30 was launched, it didn’t take long for it to become the amp of choice for British rock bands, used by everyone from The Beatles (both George and John had AC-30s) to the Rolling Stones – and most other British Invasion bands who followed. Keith Richards said: “The Vox AC-30 is the best all-round British amp of all time, without a doubt.”

The AC-30 is an amp suited for most styles of music: Jeff Beck(in The Yardbirds) helped to invent garage and psych-rock with the help of a fuzz pedal and a Vox AC-30; Marc Bolan recorded some of the most enduring Glam Rock songs with it; Rory Gallagher helped to define 70′s Blues Rock with an AC-30; Brian May used AC30s (lots of them!) in Queen; Paul Weller kick-started a mod revival with his punk band The Jam and trusty Vox AC-30s, and The Edge of stadium rockers U2  still swears by his old AC-30.

Metal-heads be warned! The Vox AC-30 is not the ideal choice for crunchy, hi-gain tones. But, even so, Kirk Hammet of metal gods Metallica also fell in love with the sound of a Vox AC-30 and used it in the studio for the Load and Reload albums. He said: “I was also impressed with the Vox AC30, I didn’t really know how good that was before.”

Today, despite the popularity of many great amps (by Fender, Marshall, Orange or Hiwatt, for instance) it’s still the Vox AC-30 that is used, live or in the studio, by many of the biggest new British rock acts, crowning the Vox AC-30 as the classic Bristish rock’n'roll amp – as popular now as ever, having helped to shape the sound of some of the finest rock songs of the past 50 years!

Since the 90′s, the Vox AC-30 has been as essential to the new generation of British bands as it was in the 60′s. Bands who use/ have used AC-30 amps include Britpop legends such as Oasis, Suede, The Verve and Radiohead.

In the 2000′s, after a few years of the UK music scene being dominated by US-acts like the Strokes and White Stripes, The Libertines started a British rock revival with Vox AC-30s and became the most influential new English band of the decade. Since then, acts who have used AC-30s include Arctic Monkeys, Kasabian, Razorlight,  The Kooks, Babyshambles, Mystery Jets and many, many others…

And on the other side of the Atlantic, Dave Grohl of the Foo Fighters is perhaps the most famous Vox AC-30 user. He told Total Guitar: “We used an AC30 on pretty much everything. You can go clean, dirty, bright or fat.”

The official message board for the Line 6 website has been buzzing with talks and speculations about the release of a new range of Line 6 Spider Valve amps.

Of course, we all know Line 6 is very good at improving and updating their range of guitar amps. After all, haven’t Line 6 just released the Spider IV range, for instance? So it should come as no surprise if/ when Line 6 decides to release Mk II of the Spider Valve range, since the original amps have been so well-received!

But the fact is that, for the time being, Line 6 is keeping their lips very tight and no one really knows the details for any possible new Spider Valve MKII model, so there’s not much Dolphin Music can tell you!

One thing is for sure: by blending modeling technology with real all-valve amp specs (Bogner designed!) the original Line 6 Spider Valve range really innovated the world of modeling amps, and the prospect of new and improved Spider Valve Mk II amps is very exciting indeed, so no wonder people are already talking about it!

Other prospective new release seems to be the Line 6 M9 Stompbox Modeler. There are talks – and even a photograph! – about this new M9 stompbox modeler on the Harmony Central forum. We found similar rumours in several other web forums…

The Line 6 M13 Stompbox has been a well-received released, but the prospect of a new, simpler and smaller stompbox modeler seems very, very interesting indeed!

Once again, Line 6 can’t confirm any details, so there’s not much we can tell, certainly not the specs. Apparently, some people have described this new model as a “DL4 with other stuff in”, which sounds…really cool!

If there’s any truth in the rumours then expect more exciting news in the forthcoming weeks! This Autumn should be great for fans of modeling FX. Let’s just hope Line 6 are able to confirm those releases soon!

The Hofner violin bass, used by Paul McCartney since the Beatles’ early years, has become one of rock’n'roll most iconic musical instruments, and, in a field dominated by guitar heroes and their axes, it’s also quite possibly the most recognisable bass guitar ever.

And that odd, retro design also means that it’s still one of the best, too. Why? When Ashdown made a tube amp head, it was always going to be something very special. The BTA 400 (Big Tube Amp) partners a feature-laden ABM EVO III preamp with a sledgehammer 400W power section comprising of 8 KT88 tubes and massive output transformers. You get a sub-harmonic generator, built-in compressor and classic Ashdown ‘rotary plus slider’ EQ providing 20dB of cut and boost at 60Hz, 660Hz and 5kHz, supplemented by 15dB cut and boost at 180Hz, 340Hz, 1.3kHz and 2.6kHz.

There’s only two types of guitarists – those who love their Vintage V100 Les Paul guitars, and those who never played one. We’re yet to hear from guitarists who are disappointed with theirs. Why?

It’s tempting to try to compare the Vintage Les Paul guitars with the Epiphone models, but truth is each company has a very different approach to the Les Paul guitars they make. Vintage concentrate on, erm, “vintage looking” Les Paul guitars, taking their cue from the Les Paul Standard models, including vintage specs such as plastic tulip tuners. Epiphone, on the other hand, at the moment at least, concentrates on making more modern-looking Les Pauls and, in fact, their Les Paul Standard models are not one of their highlights. So, the best Les paul for you may depend on your taste in guitar, really!

One of the coolest models Vintage makes is the V100 Wine Red, which resurrects the 70′s Gibson Les Paul Deluxe, a model that not even Gibson themselves make anymore! With its mini-humbuckers (more or less a cross of humbucker and P-90 sound) and gold hardware, the V100 Wine Red is simply stunning – and looks as good as the Gibson original.

Some snobs might disaprove of the Vintage guitars simply because they don’t have the Gibson seal of approval, but the fact is those are great guitars that are good, afordable and are helping keeping the Les Paul-style guitars popular, especially amongst younger guitarists who perhaps can’t afford the real deal.
